A traditional Bulgarian food and wine tour through the eyes of a British traveller

Hey, I’m Angela, Mum of two beautiful grown-up daughters & a Business Owner based in the UK.  This year is my Silver Wedding Anniversary; luckily my husband has always understood my need for travel & adventure!

Six years ago, I met up with one of my daughters on her Gap Year travels in New Zealand. We joined a 7 day Haka Adrenaline Tour of South Island & made some awesome multi-national friends, most of whom have stayed in touch with reunions in New York, London, Singapore, & Geneva to date.

When our USA Haka friend Jolie, mentioned she wanted to trace her family routes in Bulgaria, our Sofia reunion was born with friends flying in from New York, London, Birmingham & Geneva.

As the most prolific traveller, it was my role to research trips & tours.  Jolie & I are both qualified in Wine Education/Sommelier courses. Knowing Bulgaria has some great wines & having enjoyed Food & Wine Tours in many other cities, it was my first thought!

Sofia Top Tours quickly stood out whilst researching on the Viator website.  The tour was well structured, combining site seeing with varied food stops & the all-important wine tasting. The reviews were excellent, exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

And boy, it didn’t disappoint! Our Guides, Stella & Marina were both knowledgable & passionate about their country.  A young startup company, who really went the extra mile to make sure we all had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Every food stop offered something uniquely different, a real flavour of Bulgarian specialities. The Rye drink was gorgeous, who knew?!  The little dessert shop, incredibly quaint & Wow, those cakes!! As a Vegetarian, I was apprehensive that the menu selections would be too heavily meat orientated but not at all. Bulgaria is rich in vegetation, with the freshest & most flavoursome foods available to suit all palates.

The absolute highlight was the Wine Tasting & I’ve done a lot of them, all over the world! Our host was delightful. We tasted 6 wines from a variety of unique Bulgarian grapes & terroir. Each precisely & professionally guided. Our group included an Australian/British couple, who clearly knew their wines too & our Sofia Top Tours Guides were astute & flexible in the extra time we spent at the Tasting, which everyone thoroughly appreciated!

Bulgaria has been an interesting find. Tourism is in its relative infancy and yet the country has so much to offer; great food & world class wines, beautiful mountains for hiking/skiing, friendly people. Rila Monastery is a stunning UNESCO site & our day trip to North Macedonia gave yet another flavour of the area. Sofia is full of history & culture, it’s central square of tolerance beautifully constructed & easy for navigation purposes.

I’m happy to recommend Sofia Top Tours to anyone looking for an enjoyable way to gain some cultural insight into a country with a fascinating history, great food & some outstanding wines!
